چکیده

Accurate yet simple methods for tra c engineering are important for e cient management of resources in broadband networks. The goal of this paper is to apply and evaluate large deviation techniques for tra c engineering. In particular, we employ the recently developed theory of e ective bandwidths, where the e ective bandwidth depends not only on the statistical characteristics of the tra c stream, but also on a link's operating point through two parameters, the space and time parameters, which can be computed using the many sources asymptotic. We show that this e ective bandwidth de nition can accurately quantify resource usage. Furthermore, we estimate and interpret values of the space and time parameters for various mixes of real tra c demonstrating how these values can be used to clarify the e ects on the link performance of the time scales of tra c burstiness, of the link resources (capacity and bu er), and of tra c control mechanisms such as tra c shaping. Our experiments involve a large set of MPEG-1 compressed video and Internet Wide Area Network (WAN) traces, as well as modeled voice tra c.

Many Sources Asymptotic and Eeective Bandwidths: Investigation with Mpeg Traac

The ability to quantify and accurately measure resource usage in broadband networks is important in areas such as network dimensioning, call acceptance control, and charging for network services. Closely related is the ability to identify and measure quantities such as the relevant space and time scales (see below). This is important for accurate and eecient traac modeling. The many sources asy...

Eeective Bandwidths for Multiclass Markov Fluids and Other Atm Sources

We show the existence of eeective bandwidths for multi-class Markov uids and other types of sources that are used to model ATM traac. More precisely, we show that when such sources share a buuer with deterministic service rate, a constraint on the tail of the buuer occupancy distribution is a linear constraint on the number of sources. That is, for a small loss probability one can assume that e...

On the effective bandwidth in buffer design for the multi-server channels

Gibbens and Hunt 3] derive the expression for the eeective bandwidths for a uniform arrival and service model of traac ow ooered to a multi-service channel. Their model is based on negative exponentially distributed on-times of the traac sources. The present study leads to the expression for the eeective bandwidth without specifying these distributions explicitly. By the results so obtained the...

Statistical Multiplexing of Self-Similar Tra c: Theoretical and Simulation Results

This paper studies the eeective bandwidth required when multiple self-similar (i.e., long range dependent) traac sources are statistically multiplexed together in a network. In particular, a theoretical eeective bandwidth formula developed by Ilkka Norros 17] is used as the basis for deriving additional theoretical results for self-similar traac. An ATM network simulator is then used to assess ...
